Tasting Notes:

Notes taken 23 April 2011, at 40 days in the keg. Poured from keg into a clear mug.

Appearance: rich brown hue with a crystal-clear body. Head was pretty big initially due to a rather vigorous pour, but it has settled down to a solid finger of creamy off-white foam and a pretty decent lace on the glass. I'm quite happy with the look of this beer. (4)

Smell: very nice, well-rounded malt aroma with some toasty and slightly nutty components. Hops are more or less nonexistent, but I fancy there are some earthy undertones here. All in all, a great smelling beer. (4.5)

Taste: sweetish malt flavor with a little earthy bitterness toward the end. Toasty and somewhat biscuity notes complement the malt; overall it is smooth and very pleasing. There is an aftertaste of slightly vegetabley hops which actually doesn't harm the flavor at all. There's also the tiniest hint of sourness which does detract a little, but overall I think it's a damn fine beer. (4)

Mouthfeel: medium to medium-light body with a big dose of creaminess from carbonation. Brown ales aren't necessarily supposed to have this much carbonation, but I like it so there you go. I'm pleased. (4)

Drinkability: I am very pleased with how this beer turned out. Drinkability is quite high, in my opinion; great flavor and a low ABV mean that I could quaff gallons of this stuff without much problem. (4.5)

Overall score 4.15 (A-). This beer is really delicious, especially for a low-abv session-type beer. I am extremely impressed with myself on this one -- can't wait to make it again.
