General Notes:

Tasting Notes:

Reviewed 10/13/2009. Poured from bomber into a pint glass.

Appearance: almost entirely black with a slight shade of very dark brown when held up to the light. One-finger tan head which dissipated quickly, leaving no lace. (3.5)

Smell: slightly subtle, but nice. Mostly a rich, sweet chocolate aroma. No hops in the nose. (3.5)

Taste: nice chocolate flavor but with some tartness toward the end. Bitterness is nice, but could probably be taken down a notch or two to really make this a delicious chocolate stout. Good but not great, overall. (3.5)

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, pretty creamy overall. This bottle carbonated pretty well. (3.5)

Drinkability: very good, but the slight tartness and over-bitterness create a cumulative effect which is less than pleasant. This beer is very drinkable at the beginning but its less-optimal qualities start to grate after a few swallows. (3)

Average score 3.45 (B-). This is one of my favorite homebrews so far, but it really could use some fine tuning. I'm thinking maybe tone it down to 8 AAU of bittering hops and maybe going half-and-half black barley and chocolate malt. I am quite happy with the level of chocolate produced by the black barley; I like the idea of keeping this beer way more toward the chocolate side than the coffee side when it comes to roasted flavors.
