Tasting Notes: Tasting notes taken 27 August 2014, 31 days after kegging. Dispensed from kegerator into a clear mug. Appearance: very dark amber-brown hue with a fair bit of murky haze. Head poured two fingers of creamy tan foam which recede slowly, albeit leaving no lace. Really quite good for a porter; I'm satisfied. (4) Smell: roasty and toasty robust porter aroma with a surprisingly good dose of maple character. I assumed that the syrup would all ferment out, leaving nothing of the original maple. I am quite pleasantly surprised though; not only does the maple come through, but there are none of the cidery notes I was afraid of based on some of my other sugar-addition beers. It also adds a much nicer character than honey. Despite the expense, I'll definitely be using maple syrup again. (4) Taste: a rather light porter character with a very slightly mapley finish. Overall the flavors are quite subtle, but the total effect is smooth and balanced. A little more chocolate character might be nice, but in general I'm quite pleased. (3.75) Mouthfeel: well-carbonated with a medium body -- again, more body than I would have guessed based on my extraction rate and the recipe itself; perhaps that 157° mash temp did its job. I think it's great. (4) Drinkability: a highly quaffable porter, even at 6.7%. Those fermentables add up quick! It's not hot or alcoholey at all, and goes down very smooth. I'm quite happy with it. (4) Overall score 3.9 (B+). I'm really happy with how this beer turned out. I think if I hit target efficiency, it might be a 4. I've never used English chocolate malt before; it was a whim purchase while at the LHBS. I think I might do this with a full pound of said malt if I do it again. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
