Tasting Notes: Tasting notes taken 19 November 2017, 35 days after kegging. Dispensed from kegerator into a dimpled mug. Appearance: rich, dark brown with some reddish-brown around the edges and a little bit of haziness. Head is a thin layer of light-tan foam that leaves a relatively nice lace. I would have preferred more head; this is really just an ongoing carbonation issue that I can't seem to deal with. (3.75) Smell: very yeasty with a little bit of caramel sweetness and roast. There's also a little hint of acetone at the end which I don't love, but isn't *too* much of a distraction. I think brewing during a heatwave with inadequate temperature control was a bit of a mistake. (3.5) Taste: yeasty, bready and a little bit caramelly; I feel like that dash of acetone comes through in the flavor perhaps even a little bit more than in the aroma. Again, it's not the worst thing in the world, but it's an imperfection that I'd rather not be in the mix. Otherwise, I think the recipe itself shows promise. (3.5) Mouthfeel: it's not as woefully undercarbonated as the head would suggest, but it could definitely use more. Body is a little on the thin side, as well, even for the style; I'll need to work on this aspect of it. (3.25) Drinkability: despite its flaws, I still find this to be a nicely drinkable beer. It goes down easy, but has enough character to be interesting. I might try a beer like this again with better temp control. (3.75) Overall score 3.55 (B). Not the worst beer I've ever made, and not the best. I think I would like to revisit this style. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
