Tasting Notes: Tasting notes taken 13 February 2011. Poured from tap into a weizen glass. Appearance: murky golden-yellow hue with two fingers of creamy white head. Head has decent retention and leaves big globs of lace on the glass. I'm quite happy with the look of this brew. (4) Smell: the citrusy fruitiness of the fresh hops mixes well with the very banana-like aroma profile I got from the 3068 yeast. I think fermenting on the lower end, in the mid 60s, gives me precisely the aroma I love in a hefeweizen. Overall, this has some notes of tropical fruit juice blends, while still maintaining a very beery quality. I like it a lot. (4) Taste: bitter, with a bit of a pungent character. The banana aroma is lost here in the flavor. I'm not a huge fan of the Saaz hops in this application. I think in the future if I do a hop-heavy hefeweizen I will use a gentler hop, maybe a tettnanger, and pare back the IBUs a little bit. It's not bad, but I'm not completely in love with it. (3.5) Mouthfeel: body is on the light side of medium, but the carbonation is really quite good. There's a fantastic creaminess to this which I love. Most of this is due to the kegerator, rather than any inherent quality of the beer, but I will take what I can get. (4.5) Drinkability: quite tasty and refreshing. There are some flavor imperfections, but there are enough good traits going on in this beer to leave a pretty good impression on me. (4) Overall score 3.85 (B+). This is actually the same score I accorded Heat Wave Hefeweizen, although each beer has quite different strengths. As I noted, I think my next hop-centric hefe will be gentler than this one, but as of right now I'm really looking forward to implementing the procedural improvements this beer has over Heat Wave, but with Heat Wave's recipe. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
