Tasting Notes:

Tasting notes taken 3 July 2012, 48 days after kegging. Poured from tap into a tulip. I know a tulip isn't the typical presentation for an IPA, but I like this glass; it makes everything fancier.

Appearance: light golden-orange hue with a clear body and a low, lazy effervescence. Head poured two thick fingers of soft ivory foam which has a good retention and leaves a nice lace on the glass. Quite good looking, I'd say. (4)

Smell: quite citrusy, ever so slightly earthy and funky hop character. There's a malty sweetness underneath which does bring out a bit of that earthiness. It's not super complex, which I think is a function of single-hop IPAs, but I think Centennial will be a good choice in recipes going forward. I like it. (4)

Taste: big flavor with nice fruity, citrusy and somewhat piney hop character. It's not super malty, but this recipe was bombed with so much hops, it was never intended to be particularly balanced. Actually pretty tasty and refreshing; one of my more successful IPAs, I would say. (4)

Mouthfeel: medium to medium-light body with a very good carbonation despite little visual evidence of effervescence. This builds a pretty nice creaminess on the palate; again, I like it. (4)

Drinkability: it's good, and refreshing, but the bitterness and somewhat one-dimensional hop flavor make this taxing to just quaff indefinitely. Good, but perhaps not wonderful. (3.5)

Overall score 3.95 (B+). I like this beer well enough, but it is a bit bitter and monotonuos to just sit down and drink a bunch of it. I think this is a drawback of single hop IPAs in general, though. This beer did serve its purpose, though, in giving me a good idea of how to use Centennial going forward.
